For many years, Keski-Pohjanmaa, or Mellersta Österbotten had been a Finnish capital of tar burning, and its regional center - Kokkola was an important center of shipbuilding and trade. 

Nowadays the region has more livestock and dairy farms than the national average, most of which are organic. There is also plenty of berry farms and grain fields in the region.
