Kainuu or Kajanaland is a sparsely inhabited region, large part of which is covered with lakes and birch, pine, and spruce forests. The center of the region is located in Kajaani.

Kainuu is known for its forestry, as well as for dairy, and beef cattle farming, berry growing, potato, cabbage, and beets farms.
