Etelä-Karjala, or Södra Karelen – is an important historical, cultural and recreational region spread on the shores of the freshwater lake of Saimaa. The administrative center is located in the city of Lappeenranta.

Most of the land area of the region is covered with forest, therefore Etelä-Karjala is mainly focusing on commercial forestry and berry picking.
